Breathe in……
Breathe out…….

That’s the lovely smell of SUMMER which means it’s ROAD TRIP SEASON 2021! The world is ~finally~ getting back to what feels like normal. If you’re like me, you are itching to travel again. Flight prices are sky high (pun intended)! That makes spending 10+ hours confined in a vehicle with your friends and family seem not so bad. Now the question to answer is: “where should we go???”

Every family is different in what they might be looking for in a road trip vacation, so I’m going to offer up a few great alternatives depending on your road trip style. So be sure to buckle up, bring lots of snacks, and check out these amazing road trip destinations.

Adventure Seekers: Skyline Drive

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia just west of D.C., this road trip won’t fall short of beauty or adventure. It is in Shenandoah National Park which allows for a mixture of scenic views and developed shops, lodging and restaurants. Open 24/7 (outside of inclement weather closings), the Skyline Drive is just over 100 miles and takes about three hours to complete. Those three hours will be filled with over 70 scenic overlooks of the Shenandoah Valley and the rolling Piedmont.

For those thrill seekers out there, this drive rarely goes over 35mph thanks to the winding roads. You’ll also want to make sure your vehicle can clear Mary’s Rock Tunnel that has a maximum clearance of 12’8″. Did I mention the wildlife? Oh yeah. I’m talking deer. Black bears. Wild turkeys. Them and all their friends cross roads on the Skyline Drive daily. It’s advised to stay in your vehicle – do with that information what you will. And when you need a break from the car, there are several places to hike or just pull over and relax at one of the scenic overlooks. You won’t forget this thrilling drive!

Scenic to the Max: Pacific Coast Highway

There’s something special about this drive – and not just because it hugs over 600 miles of coastline. This insanely scenic drive also has a beautiful mixture of dense forests and historical sites along the way. This road trip is over 1,600 miles and runs from the north to south tip of the U.S., allowing its passengers to enjoy a variety of climates. Everything from the desert heat to the salty coastlines – this trip is sure to please everyone along the way (except those who maybe aren’t a fan of the ocean).

Some notable stops along this route include Big Sur and Cambria in California, as well as Dune County, Oregon and Olympic National Park, Washington. Although this is a longer drive, it can be split up over a few days (or years) depending on how slow you want to go. Take time to enjoy the sites, the local food, and the history embedded in this drive!

Classic Road Trippers: Route 66

“Main Street of America”, “The Mother Road”, whatever you call it – you just can’t go wrong with this one. It’s a classic road trip that we all know and love…well most of us know. Some of us might not be a huge fan of the 2,500 miles this road trip involves. But if you have the time, the patience and the gas – then I say GO FOR IT!

Your journey will be filled with fascinating stops lining the route in most of the small towns it passes through. Diners, motels, gift shops – you name it. Back in its heyday it brought in a plethora of much needed revenue to America’s small towns. It was a well-traveled route and used by many to visit family, follow a new job opportunity, and even escape the Dust Bowl. From the Grand Canyon to the red dirt in Oklahoma and the busy city streets of St. Louis – you get it all with this one!

Stop to Smell the Roses

A figure of speech, but one that emphasizes what a road trip can really be. Whether you and your gal pals are having a girls trip or the family is loading up in the RV – road trips are really about spending time with each other, seeing new sites and experiencing new places. I think this world could use a bit more of that – taking time to truly stop and smell the roses.

Happy Road Tripping!
