Artificial intelligence is rapidly making its way into K–12 classrooms. However, as districts rush to adopt these tools, an important reality is often overlooked: AI tools are only as safe and effective as the policies that govern them.
We are entering unfamiliar territory. Many AI products are visually impressive and easy to deploy, which can create a false sense of readiness. Without clear policies, guardrails, and oversight, even well-intentioned AI adoption can introduce significant risks not only to students but also to district security, data privacy, and infrastructure integrity.
When implemented thoughtfully and managed responsibly, AI can be an exceptional resource for educators and learners. When deployed without structure, it can quickly become a liability.

AI tools evolve faster than traditional educational technology. Policies provide stability in an otherwise fast-moving landscape. They establish expectations, define acceptable use, and ensure that innovation does not outpace accountability.
