Maybe you have been contemplating this for a long time. Or maybe its a brand new idea that you just started tossing around. Better yet – it might even be someone else’s idea (a spouse, kiddo, your subconscious). I’m sure the pandemic brought this idea to a lot of people seeking some sort of companionship and normalcy in a less than normal world. Others might really just be looking for entertainment and something to video for their next TikTok. Regardless of where, when or why the idea came about, the answer is yes. YOU SHOULD GET A PUPPY. And I’m going to tell you why. But first, a little background as to why you should trust me as an expert on the matter.

I currently have a 5 month old Australian Shepherd and her name is Kaia. That’s it.

Reason #1: PUPPIES ARE SO CUTE

We have all seen the Facebook posts or the Instagram pics of our friends and family who got a puppy. There is absolutely no denying the cuteness that flows out of them, among other things (we will get to that later). I’ll be honest, at the surface that’s what made me want a puppy. I wanted to take all sorts of adorable photos and videos of our little furry friend to share with the world. My husband and I had tossed the idea around for a while. We kept coming up with excuses as to why we should wait.

  • Both of us work full-time
  • We like to travel
  • Our house is “neat” and we want to keep it that way

The bottom line is that there are always going to be excuses in life. A million reasons why NOT to do something or why you shouldn’t even try. Sometimes you only need one good reason why. And if you are one of those people who needs more than one reason, then keep on reading.

Reason #2: Puppies Make Good Company

We all know last year was a trying year for a lot of people. Some were directly affected by COVID-19 itself. Some were (or still are) indirectly affected through missed work or lost jobs. Regardless, I think it’s safe to say that if you had an adorable and energetic little ball of fur who was just excited that you exist – it would make life a little bit better. You know, there’s not much that beats the welcome I get from Kaia every single time I come home, without fail. Imagine being greeted with that much love and excitement! It makes your heart pretty happy, regardless of the day you’ve just had or the messy house you might be coming home to.

When properly trained, puppies can be an exciting presence in any household. They typically ALWAYS want to hangout with you – which can be a blessing and a curse (but mostly a blessing). Trying to make breakfast? Need to use the bathroom? Want to nap? BOOM. There they are. 24/7 company. Some of you might cringe at that, but don’t worry. You can get your alone time by sending them to the backyard or doggy day care when needed. If you have kiddos, they can be entertainment for each other too! And if you don’t have kiddos, puppies are a great way to prepare for them. They can also teach kids some great responsibility and cleaning skills – extra bonus!

I will say it is nice having another pair of ears in the house to talk to – even if she can’t exactly talk back. We appreciate another soul roaming around who’s always ready for a good life chat and belly scratch.

Reason #3: They Make You A Better Person

Accountability is a big thing for a lot of people – myself included. I need people in my life to push me, encourage me and support me. Kaia does a great job of that. For example, she pushes me to wake up early (I’m talking 4:30am early) so I have plenty of time to go to the gym AND hangout with her before work. Puppies do a great job of kindly forcing you to be more active as well and not just sit on your couch all evening (as I was accustomed to). They also give your life a sense of structure, because Lord knows that if we get 1 minute past our regular meal time then the world just might come to an end.

On a deeper level, they really do make you want to be a better person. They are counting on you for pretty much everything. Food, water, shelter, cuddles and more food. Puppies are completely reliant on their owners and you don’t want to let them down. That being said, puppies are a big commitment and one that should not be taken lightly. If you can’t handle the leash then don’t get the collar. But they really do make you live a happier and more full life (even psychology says so) – only if you are up to the challenge!

Are You Convinced Yet?

In all seriousness, I know puppies – or pets in general – are not for everyone. I found a soft spot in my heart for being a dog mom, and I’m loving it. So much so that you can follow along with Kaia’s journey on her Instagram (shameless plug)! However, I would highly encourage you to find the thing that IS for you. Maybe you’re an ice skater, a wood carver or a boxer (dog pun intended). Whatever it is, I hope it’s genuine, fun and fulfilling for you. Because we all deserve to live a fulfilling and meaningful life!

All the best,
Bonny & Kaia
